A Snapshot in Time...

Great Grandma Sarah sitting in her chair by the living room window tatting a lace handkerchief with the smell of carrot pudding cooking on the stove. Grandma Reva so carefully mixed all the ingredients and placed them in the coffee can to steam for several hours to be served after the Thanksgiving feast with Rum sauce and whipped cream. Grandpa James is home now from feeding the cattle smelling of sweat and pink peppermint candy. Cousins, Aunts, and Uncles are sitting in the parlor playing a competitive game of pinochle. The dining room table is being set with rose patterned china, gold rimmed crystal glasses and the gum drop turkeys we made with toothpicks placed at each setting. The steam on the windows is thick from all the cooking and Grandma saying "dinner will be ready in 30 minutes so quit eating candy or it will ruin your meal". Just looking around and taking it all in. The smells, the sounds, my family... we may not all be here together again was my thought...
Do you ever have those snapshots in time when you consciously think, "I need to pause and remember this moment"?

Help

Thank you for this refrection. You have a beautiful style of narrative exposition. I see it, I smell it, I was there. You have a gift for writing.
What I paused on and remember a moment is when my dad came home from work when I was little and he bought a long playing record for me and then I played it and we danced to Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, etc.
Thank you for this reflection/meditation Kris.
Samme
Glad you enjoyed it Samme. The sense of smell is so profound. My grandma Reva wore a perfume from Paris and it was in a cobalt blue bottle with a gold lid, I just cannot remember the name. Occasionally I will get a whiff of this perfume from out of nowhere and I know at that instant she is with me.
I bet everytime you hear Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band you think of your father… what a wonderful memory.
